Campbell, Henrietta

10/14/1977

Henrietta Campbell was born in 1886, perhaps in April, to Sarah “Sallie” Burke Burnett (1859-1926). Mrs. Campbell died in 1977. Her husband was John Gordon Campbell (9/15/1885—5/16/1948)

Memories by Emma Phillips, daughter-in- law

Henrietta and Gordon Campbell started the Otter Creek church in their home on Otter Creek Road. Gordon drove a bus to pick up children to bring them to their home where Mrs. Campbell would teach them. Later the first church was built across the street from their home. The church later moved to the corner of Otter Creek Road and Granny White Pike. I married into the family in 1962 so I never knew Mr. Campbell. Mrs. Campbell was small in stature and was probably the sweetest person you would ever want to meet – always smiling. She never had a bad word to say about anybody. She especially loved children. She baked the communion bread by herself for many years. They were foster parents to Eddie Phillips, whom I married, and his brother, Bob. The boys were five and six years old when the Campbells took them into their home. Eddie lived with Mrs. Campbell until we married but served in the Air Force for four years. Even after we married, he took very good care of his mother.

Eddie and I were married for thirty-seven years before his death on October 11, 1999. Five years earlier he had had a massive stroke and I was able to care for him at home.
