Nashville: Ellen Elizabeth “Tottie” Ellis, who campaigned nationally against the Equal Rights Amendment, died Thursday. She was seventy-one. She gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s, when she fought against the ERA, calling it detrimental to family and family values. The amendment was defeated in 1982. President named her in 1980 to the Republican Party’s Family Policy Advisory Board. Mrs. Ellis also wrote columns for seven years for USA Today.

Ellen Elizabeth "Tottie" Ellis, 71, a newspaper columnist and political activist who campaigned nationally against the Equal Rights Amendment, died Oct. 26 in Nashville. The cause of death was not reported. She gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s when she fought against the ERA, calling it detrimental to the family and family values. The amendment was defeated in 1982.
