When I visited the Justisses at Lakeshore on Wedgewood, I would sometimes find them at the table with the Hoopers or somewhere near them. Sydney’s attentiveness to his beloved Roberta sometimes moved me to tears. He would carefully arrange her food or help her eat. After both wives had died and Sidney and Howard moved to the Meadows, I had to pass Sydney’s room to get to Howard’s. He was always glad to see me and would show me the pictures around the room, tell me about Roberta and his family, and show me the books he was reading--heavy books about wars and presidents. We took him a copy of The Wars of Myron King because he knew the man but not the story. Occasionally, there would be a group in the dining hall to sing with patients. I would go. So would Sydney. Several times when I passed, he would be sitting in a chair, leading patients in songs, physical exercises, and mental exercises, such as saying the alphabet backwards. He visited Howard almost every day. He was a delightful man till the day he died. I loved him very much.
